You are eligible if you graduate from a CACMS-accredited Canadian school, a school in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a Canada Sponsor Note, or an accredited US osteopathic school. Apply in your physiciansapply.ca account, upload identity documents and pay. International graduates first pay for a source verification request on their medical degree. Allow up to about four weeks for processing. Your window to schedule and write is 12 months from acceptance.
Who qualifies
The MCC defines eligibility by the school you attend, not by your citizenship or where you live. There are three routes:
- Canadian schools. A graduate, or a student expected to complete the graduation requirements, of a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS).
- International schools. A graduate of a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a Canada Sponsor Note. The note shows that the school meets the MCC requirement for sitting the exam. If your school has no such note, you cannot apply until that changes.
- US osteopathic schools. A graduate of a school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association.
The exam is for people at the end of undergraduate medical training or beyond. It tests the generalist level needed to begin supervised practice. Students may apply before they finish: the MCC allows applications up to 15 months before expected graduation, and the window for the exam application opens 12 months before. Read the current conditions on the MCC eligibility page, since final graduation evidence is still required.
Check your school's listing before you plan anything else. If the World Directory entry lacks the Canada Sponsor Note, you need to resolve that with your school and the MCC first. We cannot verify individual school listings.
The application, step by step
- Create or open your physiciansapply.ca account. This is the MCC portal used for exams and for later credential services. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your identity document.
- Choose Examinations, then Apply for an exam. Select the MCCQE and confirm your school and graduation details.
- Upload identity documents. The MCC specifies acceptable documents in the portal. Use clear scans of the originals.
- International graduates: submit the source verification request (SVR). It is paid separately. The MCC contacts your school to verify the degree, and the exam application cannot move on until verification is complete.
- Pay the application fee. The fee was CAD 1,500 on the page we checked. It is non-refundable in full, so confirm your target session before paying. Our booking and fees guide lists the withdrawal and rescheduling rules.
- Wait for acceptance. Allow up to about four weeks. Do not book travel until you have both acceptance and a Prometric confirmation.
The source verification step
The SVR is where most international candidates lose time. The MCC verifies your medical degree directly with the issuing school or authority. The speed depends on the school, so it is the step you do not control. The practical rules are:
- Start it first, before you finalize your session plan.
- Use the contact details your school asks for. Ask your school's registrar's office in advance to expect the MCC request.
- Keep copies of what you submit, and check your account for status messages every few days.
- If the school is slow, contact the registrar by email and keep a log of the dates. Do not assume the MCC can speed the school's response.
The SVR amount is shown on the MCC fees page. We do not state it here, because it can change, and it is charged separately from the exam fee.
The 12-month eligibility window
Acceptance starts a 12-month window to schedule and write the exam. Three rules matter:
- It ends early if you write, withdraw or are absent. A new application and a new fee follow.
- You can extend it once. Request a 12-month extension within 60 days of expiry. The cost was CAD 120 plus any fee increase.
- You must book inside it. Appointments open up to five months before a session, so check that your target session falls inside your window.
A good habit is to put three dates in your calendar: the acceptance date, the extension deadline and the expiry. If acceptance came in May, a session in the next April is reachable, but anything later needs an extension.

Common application problems
- Name mismatch. The name on your account, your ID and your degree should agree. Resolve differences before submission.
- Unreadable scans. Upload colour scans with all corners visible.
- Applying too close to a session. Processing of up to four weeks plus booking leaves little time. A reasonable minimum is three months, and for international graduates, six.
- Paying before confirming the date. The exam fee is non-refundable in full.
- Assuming a pass guarantees licensure. The exam is one requirement. Provincial regulators and residency programs have their own conditions.
Why you take it: CaRMS and licensure
For international medical graduates, the MCC states that a pass is required to apply to Canadian residency programs through CaRMS, and that it is a criterion for the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC). The rules for the LMCC and for the second part of the qualifying process have been changing. Some secondary sources say the LMCC is granted automatically on passing for applicants after 26 January 2026 and that the clinical Part II has been discontinued. We could not confirm that on mcc.ca, so check the MCC site for the current position. Provincial licensing bodies set their own requirements for practice, and they are separate from the MCC.
When you have been accepted, move to the study plan, check the session dates in the booking guide, and keep the hub open for the format and blueprint. If the exam went badly, the after-the-exam guide sets out attempts and waiting periods.
Which route are you?
Your preparation differs by background, so identify yours before you plan.
| Candidate | Typical application path | Preparation emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian medical student or graduate | Apply in physiciansapply.ca with your school. No source verification step is needed for a CACMS school. | Keep to the school's exam timetable. Focus on the blueprint gaps that your curriculum underplays. |
| International medical graduate | Source verification request, then application. Longest processing. | Canadian guidelines, prevention, law and ethics, and communication style, as well as exam technique. |
| US MD or osteopathic graduate | Application with the school evidence the MCC specifies. | Canadian screening and immunization, drug names, SI units and the health system. |
The MCC reports separate results for these groups in its technical reports, and the older figures show that first-time international graduates pass at a lower rate than Canadian graduates. That is a reason to give the Canadian content more time, not a reason to fear the exam.
A document checklist
The MCC lists the exact documents in your portal. These are the categories that applicants usually need, and you should confirm each against the portal.
- Government-issued photo identification showing your legal name.
- Evidence of your medical school and graduation, or expected graduation.
- Any name-change documents if your name differs between records.
- For international graduates, the details needed for the source verification request, such as the school's contact information.
- A payment method accepted by the portal.
Gather the documents before you open the application. Missing a document stops processing, and it restarts the wait.
A realistic timeline
These are our planning suggestions and not MCC rules. They assume the MCC's up-to-four-week processing and a five-month booking window.
- Month 0. Check your school listing, gather documents and open your account.
- Month 0 to 2. International graduates submit the source verification request and follow it up with the school.
- Month 2 to 3. Submit the application, pay, and wait for acceptance. Your 12-month window starts at acceptance.
- Month 3. Book the Prometric appointment and begin a study plan.
- Month 6 to 8. Sit the exam, leaving a margin inside the window.
If you are a student, the rules for applying before graduation let you start earlier. Read the MCC page for the dates and for the evidence you must provide after graduation.
Frequently confused points
- Eligibility is not registration. Being accepted to sit the exam does not give you any right to practise.
- The window starts at acceptance, not at booking. Delay in booking uses window time.
- Language tests are separate. Other bodies set language requirements for residency and licensure, and this page does not state them. Check the MCC, CaRMS and the provincial regulator.
- Accommodations. If you need testing accommodations, contact the MCC early, because documentation and approval take time. We have not verified the process, so follow the MCC instructions.
Before you pay
Ask three questions. Is my school listed with the right note, and have I checked the entry myself? Do I have a session in mind that fits inside a 12-month window from the likely acceptance date? Do I have a preparation plan that fits the time between now and that session? If any answer is no, delay the payment. The fee is non-refundable in full, and acceptance starts the clock on your window. Our study plan helps with the third question, and the booking guide helps with the second.

Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for the MCCQE Part I?
You must be a graduate, or a student expected to complete graduation requirements, of a CACMS-accredited Canadian medical school, a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a Canada Sponsor Note, or an accredited US osteopathic school.
Can I apply before I graduate?
Yes, in some cases. Students can apply up to 15 months before their expected graduation, and the exam application window opens 12 months before. Check the MCC eligibility page for the conditions that apply to you.
What is a source verification request?
International graduates submit and pay for a request in which the MCC verifies the medical degree directly with the school. It comes before the exam application and can take time, so start early.
How long does the MCC take to confirm eligibility?
The MCC says to allow up to about four weeks for processing. Apply well before the session you are aiming for, and before the booking window of five months.
How long does my eligibility last?
The eligibility window is 12 months from acceptance. It ends early if you write the exam, withdraw or are absent. One 12-month extension is possible within 60 days of expiry for CAD 120, plus any fee increase.
Do I need the MCCQE Part I for residency?
For international medical graduates, a pass is required to apply to Canadian residency programs through CaRMS, and it is a criterion for the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada. Confirm current requirements with the MCC and with each program.
